Stax - Museum of American Soul Music Virtual Gallery Tour

Roots of Soul
Hooper's Chapel AME Church, built in 1906 in Duncan, MS.

After the amazing introductory film that tells the Stax Records story, the museum tour begins with an exhibit that spotlights soul music's gospel roots. In our authentic, 100-year old Mississippi Delta AME church, moved from Duncan, Mississippi and reconstructed inside the museum, you'll be engulfed by the spirit of gospel hymns, sermons, and harmonious quartets via state of the art audio and visual displays. With the original hand-hewn pews made by church members, the patina of paint-chipped wood, original wood-burning stove, altar, altar table, and other items, you'll walk back in time and know the feeling of what it was like to worship in a small country church.

A person's soul is a person's essence, that part of our being which can soar to heaven. Gospel is the music of heaven on earth - the church. The Stax Museum of American Soul Music maintains that the Southern Gospel Culture provided the roots for the Soul Music Genre.
